As we welcome the New Year, its a perfect time to set some positive resolutions that can have a lasting impact on your child's health. One of the most important resolutions you can make is to prioritize your child's dental health. Good oral hygiene habits established early can lead to a lifetime of healthy smiles. Here are some practical tips to help you and your child set and achieve dental resolutions for 2026.
Brush Twice a Day
The foundation of good oral hygiene is regular brushing. Encourage your child by brushing his or her teeth twice a day, once in the morning after breakfast and once before bedtime. Use a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. For children under age six, use a dry rice grain amount of fluoride toothpaste. For children over age six, use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Aim to brush for 2 minutes, covering all tooth surfaces. For little ones, you may be done after 30 seconds, if you are brushing your child's teeth. You can use a timer or play a song to make this a fun activity.
Floss like a Boss
Flossing is essential to maintain healthy teeth and gums. It helps remove food particles and plaque from between the teeth and the gumline, areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. Teach your child to floss daily, after teeth start to touch one another. Using a child friendly flossers are a great way to introduce your child to flossing. Supervise your child's flossing until he or she can do it properly on their own.
Reduce Sugary Snacks and Drinks
Sugary snacks and drinks can contribute to tooth decay. While it is okay to enjoy sweet snacks occasionally, it is important to limit their consumption. Encourage your child to choose healthier snacks like fruits, vegetables, cheese, and yogurt. These foods not only support overall health but also help keep teeth strong and clean. When it comes to drinks, water and milk are the best choices. If your child does have sugary treats, make sure they brush their teeth afterwards.
Schedule Regular Dental Checkups
Regular dental visits are crucial for maintaining good oral health. Schedule a checkup with your child's dentist every six months. These visits allow the dentist to monitor your child's dental development, catch any potential issues, early, and provide professional cleaning and fluoride treatments. Make the dental visit a positive one by explaining what to expect and by rewarding your child afterwards.
Use Fluoride Toothpaste
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. Using a fluoride toothpaste ensures that your child receives the benefit to developing healthy strong teeth.
Lead by Example
Children often imitate their parents' behaviors. By maintaining good oral hygiene habits yourself, you are setting the tone as a positive example for your child. A family that brushes and flossing together, keeps all of their teeth healthier!
Make Dental Care Fun
Turn dental care into a fun and engaging activity. Allow your child to choose their toothbrush. Their are many kid friendly options available, featuring their favorite characters and fun colors. For older children, consider getting them an electric toothbrush with a round brushing head.
Educate About the Importance of Oral Health
Teach your child why it is important to take care of his or her teeth. Explain how good oral hygiene promotes good overall health by using age appropriate books or videos. There are several good resources that can be found by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Setting dental resolutions for your child at the start of the year is a proactive way to ensure that he or she develops healthy oral habits that will last a lifetime. By focusing on brushing, flossing and making right choices in their diet, you can help your child achieve and maintain a healthy smile. Here's to a year of Happy Healthy Smiles!
